The Summerfield Battery Energy Storage System will be located 55km east of Adelaide, near the Tungkillo switching station and Heywood interconnector. The large-scale 240 MW battery project will provide much needed backup power and grid stability – vital to maintaining a reliable and affordable electricity supply for both South Australia and the National Electricity Market.

Location and size
Located 55km east of Adelaide, the project is strategically positioned near the Tungkillo switching station and Heywood interconnector, allowing power to be sent quickly to where it is needed most.
The 240MW / 480MW/h battery will consist of 192 battery containers covering an area of around 1 hectare. The Summerfield Battery will store enough energy in reserve to power nearly 35,000 South Australian homes every day.
Supporting renewable energy
The Summerfield Battery will support South Australia’s clean energy ambitions by storing more affordable renewable energy when the sun is shining and the wind is blowing, and releasing it into the grid when it is needed most.
The battery will also allow South Australia to export more renewable energy to Victoria and to New South Wales via the planned interconnector.
The Summerfield Battery will shore up the intermittency of South Australia’s renewable energy generation – storing excess supply during low demand periods and delivering power back to the grid when it is needed most.
Further enabling South Australia’s rapid clean energy transition
Storing energy during low demand periods
Releasing energy during high demand periods
Creating approximately 150 jobs during construction
Creating 10 ongoing operations jobs
Exporting renewable energy interstate
Enabling more cheap large-scale wind and solar projects
Helping to avoid blackouts and the associated community impacts and costs
Maintaining grid stability
Delivering more affordable and reliable power
